United Square - Ball of A Time! 31 / Aug

Gordon had a good time playing the "water ball" at United Square while waiting for Gloria to finish her TLL (make up lesson for absence for Christmas Island). I actually spent $60 (on mum and my clothes) to get this free ride otherwise it cost $9 for 10min of playtime.

PB was so pissed at first as the service counter told us that they ran out of voucher! We need to come back on other day to play! However, we insisted we wanted to play on the same day and was shocked to find out that many others also were told the same thing from the service counter.

It was a long wait and finally Gordon got the ride on and had so much fun! A little reward for his hard work for his prelim which he showed lots of improvement!

Wish that he would do much better than his prelim and get in to a suitable & good secondary school!

All the best my darling boy!

National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore 2008 - 23 / Aug

Gloria was chosen to be the MC for this event and she was all excited about it. They had only 1 final rehearsal on 22/Aug just one day before the actual event.

Ah ma and I went on the actual day to support her and see how she carried herself on the stage. Suddenly, I felt she is so different!

Really a grown up girl with the high heel, stockings, blazer and a confident outlook! I must congratulate her on having achieving so much by herself, not only in studies but the willingness to venture in other areas like leadership and public speaking.

Despite having some criticism from some of her peers as being branded as "studious", "no life", "nuts" & etc....

Dear girl, do not care what others have to say about you. Sometimes in life, we cannot please all but just to stick on to your dreams and go forward. I'm sure when you look back, you will not regret what you have achieved and the journey you have enjoyed!

A Belated Posting for Gloria's 14th Birthday!

Sorry Gloria girl. Did not upload the photos taken on your birthday! It was taken using the other camera and not my hp. Anyway, we had good time at Sakae Sushi at Suntec. Remember we went to Ben & Jerry and had our yummy ice cream! I'll upload more photos after you come back from Christmas Island!

Dinner with Mr Funabiki & Family @ 京華 on 21/Aug

Mr Funabiki visited us @ Jast office about 5pm with his family and his cute Nanami! We brought him a birthday cake although it is belated by 1 day. We then went to 京華 about 5.45pm and had an early dinner! At about 7.10pm we almost finished our dinner. Marcus joined in too. He came about 6.30pm and in fact he put on a fair bit. Must be good life, good bonus! Hoped that Mr Funabiki had an enjoyable time in S'pore and I'm he did!

For All Children of the World

For Everything There’s a Season

For Everything There’s a Season

By Joy E. Walker Steward

We may not know the reason

For all of life’s suffering and pain,

But we know everything has its season,

So the sunshine will follow the rain;

There are even times when the sun shines

While the rain is still pouring down,

Those moments of grace God sends us,

Reminders that

He’s still around;

So when adversity’s fire is burning,

Expect a cooling breeze;

Know that God is right in it with you

As He moves your growth to achieve;

Embrace His tender compassion

But yield to His discipline too

For the father loves each of his children

And knows best how to nurture you;

When life’s pruning is painful,

Don’t let bitterness enter your soul,

For when pruning is done you’ll be better,

Your heart and your spirit whole;

So if this is your season for weeping,

Know your tears will end with the night,

For joy always comes in the morning

When faith gives way to sight.

The Zen of "Kung Fu Panda"?

'Enlightenment thru Entertainment' Dharma-Inspired Movie Review : by - Shen Shi'an

Po the Panda (voiced by Jack Black) is the perfect underdog - the roly-poly yet constantly hungry one, who seemed to be the exact misfit as the Dragon Warrior, who is prophesised to save a village from the wrath of Tai Lung the leopard (voiced by Ian McShane). While Po fantasised at length about being an almighty martial artist, his self-confidence wanes when he realises how far away he is in skill.

Nevertheless, Oogway the grandmaster tortoise (voiced by Randall Duk Kim) believes in his potential - just as he was sure that a peach seed could be nurtured into a peach tree, that a peach seed will transform into nothing but a peach tree - but only when supporting conditions are present. The focus on Po being the "chosen one" might remind Buddhists of how even the least likely of us have Buddha-nature!

However, Shifu the racoon (voiced by Dustin Hoffman), who was the chief disciple of Oogway, doubted Po's abilities initially, and was impatient at wanting to pluck the fruit before the seed was nurtured. Sometimes, we can only plant karmic seeds, nurture them and wait for fruition in good time! As Oogway says, "there are no accidents" - though the interplay of causes, conditions and effects takes time. Karma is not always as instant as we wish!

Po's plea to his master to "make me not me" is reminiscent of the Buddhist teaching of non-self - which paradoxically allows for "self"-transformation via personal efforts to grow in spiritual insight. Seeing Po's greed for food, Shifu uses his desires with desirable effects - by using his unending appetite as a means to motivate him to train hard and well. It's vaguely like the tantric concept of skilfully transforming gross desire into fine fuel for liberation!

Vying for the status of the Dragon Warrior, Tai Lung fights with Po for the Dragon Scroll. In truth, it was but an empty scroll, which reflects the face of the one who peers into it. This famed secret "recipe" for making one the Dragon Warrior was but a spiritual placebo, a Zen koan-like riddle. There is no secret ingredient that makes one the mightiest warrior - other than honest confidence and righteousness - which would be aligned with the truth.

Thus, Tai Lung had betrayed all that he had learnt from Shifu with his contention for the scroll, which was much ado about nothing. The honour that he assumed it promised was literally "empty" of any substantiality. That he realised nothing special from the scroll ironically proved that he did not deserve the honour it represented. As if a wordless sutra, the empty scroll interestingly becomes a good gauge to deter pride while subtly offering truth.

The empty scroll might remind some of the story of Sudhana, who goes on a quest for the absolute truth. After a long search, he meets Manjusri Bodhisattva, the personification of perfect wisdom - who points him to a tower atop a steep mountain. After a perilous ascent, Sudhana arrives at the tower - and realises it is empty! Could this imply that the journey of learning matters more than its end, while ultimate wisdom has no fixed forms?

Some other traces of Buddhist influences in the film include a scene of Crane (voiced by David Cross) being interrupted by Po while finishing a calligraphic piece of the word Zen in Chinese (Chan)! Oogway also utters thoughtfully that "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present." Perhaps it was inspired by the heart of the Bhaddekaratta Sutta (translated by Thich Nhat Hanh below), where the Buddha taught...

Do not pursue the past.

Do not lose yourself in the future.

The past no longer is.

The future has not yet come.

Looking deeply at life as it is in the very here and now, the practitioner dwells in stability and freedom.

We must be diligent today.

To wait until tomorrow is too late.

Death comes unexpectedly.

How can we bargain with it?

Runaway Housemaid - An experinece to learn from!

Ha ha! Never think that such a thing would happen to me! A run away house maid after employing 3 maids! This is the worst I ever had! She had worked for us for 1year 9mths.

Came home on Sat night (14/6) after a good movie (Kungfu Panda) and a good laugh too! When I went in the house and saw the torn envelope without any house keys in it, I knew the maid must had run away! We actually planned to send her off on the next day to the airport... Now not only do we have to waste the air ticket but also might have the risk to pay the $5k... What a mess she had left! The maid left without her clothing and I read through her diary and found out that almost all of her diary entries are: 1. Need to keep long hair 2. Need to have a hand phone 3. Need to pray! These are those things the maids are not supposed to have! Wonder what kind of training the centre has given them and do the agents remind them of those "Don ts"?

Brought in the new maid from another agent on 15/6. She seemed to look fine and work fine. Wouldn't know her true self as it has been only 3 days. However, as she had been working in Indonesia as a housemaid for 2 years, roughly she knew what to do, is just that she needs to follow our way of doing things.

Hopefully, this maid does not give us problem and does not request as much as the previous one!

(The runaway maid was at the Embassy and was persuaded to go back home as we already cancelled her work permit from 11/6. Finally we had to pay for her air ticket again and some admin fee to send her luggage to the embassy together with her salary. I even top up a little more on her salary. Does she have any consideration for us? All she wants is the above 3 points: Long hair, hand phone & pray).

Busy - Work & Family - Escape....!?

It's been a very busy week! Going from meetings to meetings, troubleshooting on site & over the phone, lots of outstanding matters not clear.....

After all, not much things seem to get going and boss pushing for results.....Stress to the brim especially with the problematic maid's issues!

Going to send her off to the airport this Sunday but do not have much confident that she can leave willingly... New maid also coming in this Sunday. Need to start to adapt to another one...sian... However, thinking that we can escape all the shoutings between mum and the maid, we feel relived!

Looking forward for the weekend to come but also afraid whether we can handle the sending of the maid... Give me your support!!

Can I escape to a peaceful paradise?

Sarah Mclachlan - Ordinary Miracle

A video clip to share with you. My family loves this movie "Charlotte's Web", based on the popular book of the same name by E.B. White.

It’s not that unusual

When everything is beautiful

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

The sky knows when it's time to snow

Don’t need to teach a seed to grow

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Life is like a gift they say

Wrapped up for you everyday

Open up and find a way

To give some of your own

Isn’t it remarkable?

Like every time a rain drop falls

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Birds and winter have their fling

But always make it home by spring

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

When you wake up everyday

Please don’t throw your dreams away

Hold them close to your heart

Cause we’re all a partOf the ordinary miracle

Ordinary miracle

Do you want to see a miracle?

Ohh ohh ohh, ohhh ohh ohh

It seems so exceptional

That things just work out after all

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Sun comes up and shines so bright

And disappears again at night

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Ohh ohh ohh, ohh ohhh ohh

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Plot summary
When Fern Arable (
Dakota Fanning) learns that her father plans to kill the runt of a litter of newborn pigs, she successfully begs him to spare the piglet's life. The farmer gives the tiny pig to Fern, who names him Wilbur and raises him as her pet. To Fern's regret, when Wilbur grows into an adult pig, Fern is forced to take him to the Zuckerman farm, where he is to be prepared as dinner in due time.
Charlotte (
Julia Roberts), a spider, lives in the space above Wilbur's sty in the Zuckermans' barn; she befriends Wilbur and decides to help prevent him from being eaten. With the help of the other barn animals, including a rat named Templeton (Steve Buscemi), she convinces the Zuckerman family that Wilbur is actually quite special, by spelling out descriptions of him in her web: "Some pig", "Terrific", "Radiant" and "Humble". Charlotte gives her full name as "Charlotte A. Cavatica", revealing her as a barn spider, an orb-weaver spider with the scientific name Araneus cavaticus.
The farm family, Wilbur, Charlotte, and
Templeton go to a fair, where Wilbur is entered in a contest. While there, Charlotte produces an egg sac. She cannot return home with Wilbur because she is dying. Wilbur tearfully says goodbye to Charlotte but manages to take her egg sac home, where hundreds of offspring emerge. Most of the young spiders soon leave, but three, named Joy, Aranea and Nellie, stay and become Wilbur's friends.

NUSH Admission Talk - 30 May

PB went on half day leave so as bring Gordon to NUSH talk which scheduled to start at 7pm. At the same time, Gloria was supposed to give a speech too on the same night to the parents and students. She had already been helping out for the Maths Carninval from 29~30 May. However, late in the evening, Ms Masni then told her to re-schedule her speech to 2 weeks later... After checking with Ms Masni, she was so nice to put her on that night to give a short speech.

Talked to Adeline (Bev's mum) and we were both quite excited about the girls giving the speech after Dr Hang. Surprised! PB, Gordon and I couldn't believe Gloria could speak so well! She did a good job and explained why she chose NUSH and how she enjoyed the flexibility of the modular systems that had helped her in her learning process.

The auditorium was almost full and we stayed back a little while to help answer questions posted by some curious parents. By the time we were back home it was already half past ten! Tuck the kids in as Gloria needs to wake up early the next morning to ACS Barker for Youth for Causes! I really think she is busier than the adults!

Gordon's 12th Birthday - 10 May'08

It's Gordon's 12th Birthday!

Gave him a surprise at Jack's Place at Parkway Parade. He didn't know we got him a bd cake. At the end of the dinner, we got the restaurant manager to play the kiddy version of bd song over the PA and the waiter brought out the cake and walked towards him!

He kept asking if there was any cake for him and told him that we have no time to buy one! Ha! Ha! Was glad that he was surprised (as he always loves surprises!).

The same day was also eve of Mother's Day so the food was ok and so so. Anyway, we enjoyed the dinner and had a good time at the arcade.

Gloria's NUSH Speech Day - 23 April 08

Finally, it is time to prove that she has made the right choice!

Recalling 2 years ago when we urged her to consider RGS instead of NUSH, however, we let her chose her own path - to pursue her own interest in Maths and Science.

We are really very happy for her for her own effort and achievement:

1.Top Student for Year One
2.Principal's List
3.Best in English
4.Best in Geography
5.Best in History

All the way, girl! We'll definitely give you our best support!
